Receptive fields and suppressive fields in the early visual system

چکیده

Initial models proposed that these operations are weighted sums, with weights given by a neuron’s receptive field. These models explain the basic features of response selectivity. They were later extended to explain a number of suppressive effects originating within and outside the region of the receptive field. The resulting models rely on division. In this division, the receptive field feeds into the numerator, and the denominator is provided by a larger, non-classical suppressive field.

Area MT neurons respond to visual motion distant from their receptive fields.

Neurons in cortical area MT have localized receptive fields (RF) representing the contralateral hemifield and play an important role in processing visual motion. We recorded the activity of these neurons during a behavioral task in which two monkeys were required to discriminate and remember visual motion presented in the ipsilateral hemifield. During the task, the monkeys viewed two stimuli, s...

Development of receptive fields in a closed-loop behavioural system

Recently it has been pointed out that in simple animals like flies a motor neuron can have a visual receptive field [1]. Such receptive fields directly generate behaviour which, through closing the perception-action loop, will feed back to the sensors again. In more complex animals an increasingly complex hierarchy of visual receptive fields exists from early to higher visual areas, where visua...

Normative theory of visual receptive fields

This article gives an overview of a normative computational theory of visual receptive fields, by which idealized shapes of early spatial, spatio-chromatic and spatiotemporal receptive fields can be derived in an axiomatic way based on structural properties of the environment in combination with assumptions about the internal structure of a vision system to guarantee consistent handling of imag...

Two-Dimensional Substructure of MT Receptive Fields

Neurons at progressively higher levels of the visual system have progressively larger, more complicated receptive fields, presumably constructed from simpler antecedent receptive fields. To study this hierarchical organization, we used sparse white noise to map receptive-field substructure (second order Wiener-like kernels) in an extrastriate motion processing area (MT) of alert monkeys. The ma...

Sparse Coding Can Predict Primary Visual Cortex Receptive Field Changes Induced by Abnormal Visual Input

Receptive fields acquired through unsupervised learning of sparse representations of natural scenes have similar properties to primary visual cortex (V1) simple cell receptive fields. However, what drives in vivo development of receptive fields remains controversial. The strongest evidence for the importance of sensory experience in visual development comes from receptive field changes in anima...
